Throwback Thursday: A Walk Into The 90’s In Nigeria (Pics and Events)

Ever wondered what it will feel like to still be in the 90’s? the same familiar easy life where all there were was watching movies like Matrix, Titanic, Terminator, Indian movies like Toofan, and sitcoms like Papa Ajasco, This life series, Paloma and Diego, amongst countless others… grooving to jams like TLC No-Scrubs. And we were also privileged to know the iconic moments Between 1990 and 1994, when Nigeria won silver, bronze and gold medals in the biannual Africa Cup of Nations competition, or when Nigerian football bounced back to global reckoning in Atlanta 1996 Olympics, the country’s football team won the gold medal, thus becoming the first African country to achieve that feat earning us the name “Giant of Africa”.

Entertainment:
The 90’s had a blend of technology and physical interaction/relationships. A mixture so rare in this age and time with lots of nudity and ratchet artists in music videos, movies, Ads., in contrast to good old days of {Baby’s day out, Everyday people, Destiny child, Home alone, Dr do little, Kids Say The Darnest Things, Usher, Boys II men, Michael jackson (*Whispers*He was every girl’s dream) Mark Morrison, Edris Abdulkareem, Daddy Showkey, Dando Drivers and so on}

Food & Pastime:
Choko milo was much more thicker and chocolaty with yummy deliciousness to booth (Yeah you read that right), Sardine was 4 in each holder (Gasp) Donkua (An Hausa snack) has a place on this list too, condensed ice cream, and the smallest satchet of cowbell was sold for 5naira.

So much to reminisce on ranging from building sandcastles with legs and Playing the best brain tasking guess game (Animal, person, place or things) to playing Mario and Nintendo. And these books amongst many made our childhood complete:

Everything seemed so simple, cheaper and easier that i had 80 naira to school everyday for a year or more, the money would buy scotch egg, small pie, a copy of superstrikas and yoghurt. Looking forward to valentine was one of the best times of a being a teenage girl as it was sure cards or gifts would pour in from boys who couldnt walk up the nerve to talk to you.

The 90’s herald the dawn of technology age in Nigeria and numerous Cyber Cafes were in business making lots of money off people who had no clue what they were doing in yahoo chat rooms. Upside, it connected us to the people from all over the world. Downsides, most lost their innocence to the likes of online porn, fraudulent behaviors that stemmed from the belief that they were “entitled” to earn what their ancestors had slaved for from the white people.

Technology:
Image result for 90s computerThere are positive outcome of cyber influence like wider and easier range of knowledge, opinions, not just the ones taught in classrooms, but facts cannot be ignored that it is easy to see why below 13-yr-olds and above can’t be children because of easy access to the unsanctioned aspects of the internet, talking back to elderly people and mimicking all they see on the net. Take away the ipods, subscribtions, and see depression shoot up…
Politics & Economy:
Let’s not forget that the 90’s was also a crucial, tear filled period for the Nigerian politics, dating from the not so revered Abacha regime to his time of death, MKO Abiola’s election win and death, Cliford Orji, IBB, the common predominant school strikes, NEPA (PHCN) strikes, NLC protests, Ken Saro Wiwa, petrol price deflations and inflations. And i remember the elders would complain of how things were ridiculously expensive back then because a cup of rice was fluctuating between 20 and 25 Naira.

On a final note, it was a bit difficult to transition to the jet age but it was worth it, and most of us wouldn’t want to still be in the 90’s knowing what we know now, but then let us know if you’d rather we still be in the easy melancholy 90s. Remember to stay positive in a world that is reeling so fast, don’t have the notion that you cant be a role model to the upcoming young ones because you are not done growing. Remember, kids these days absorbs things fast and they will remember who impacted what on them.

FlashBack: Meet The First Nigerian Women in Politics

Women’s participation in Nigerian politics is very important, however, most of the times, women are relegated to the background, as floor members and cheerleaders. Amazingly, in the pre-colonial era, women have been an important part of our political set up. For example, we have Queen Amina of Zaria in the 11th century who made Zaria a prominent Commercial Centre through her strength. Also, Moremi of Ife, Emotan of Benin, Omu Okwei of Ossomari, great amazons who displayed wonderful bravery and strength in the politics and commercial scenes.

Recipe: Tips On How To Make Spaghetti Stir Fry

I have always been a fan of Chinese dishes ever since I visited a Chinese restaurants few years ago. I have always thought the meals are so difficult to make; though I enjoy cooking but not in my dreams will I dare make a Chinese meal. Stir fry dishes originated from China and in recent centuries has spread into other parts of Asia and the West.
How to make Chinese Stir Fry
In my own opinion, Chinese stir fry is one of the easiest Chinese delicacies to make once you have the right ingredients. You will see why I said so when I show you how I made my Spaghetti stir fry. Basically, having the right mix of ingredients is key; but everything can still go wrong if you don’t have the right recipe.
Chinese Spaghetti Stir Fry Ingredients;
There are some basic condiments that need to be present in your stir fry; however, you can still add your own ingredients or remove some to give a desired taste and aroma.
  • Mixed pepper/Traffic light pepper
  • Mange Tout
  • Mushrooms
  • Mixed Chili
  • Cooked chicken breast Strips/pieces
  • Broccoli
  • Green beans
  • Baby corns
  • Onions
  • Salt
  • Oil
  • Garlic
  • Mixed vegetables (sweetcorn, peas, carrot etc.)
  • Soy Sauce
  • Maggi
Directions on how to make Spaghetti Stir Fry
My recipe is simple and easy…First thing is to prepare all the ingredients and condiments, basically all you do is cut or slice to desired shape. As seen in the images above, all the ingredients are already prepared.
Before you start frying your vegetables, you should start boiling your spaghetti at the same time. You should boil the spaghetti for about 10 minutes; it can be more depending on the amount.
Pour a little oil in the pot and let it get very hot
Pour all the vegetables in the hot oil and stir for 5 minutes
Pour the boiled spaghetti in and stir well
Add the Maggi and dark soy sauce and stir again for 2 minutes
Add any other ingredients you want to use i.e. sausages, boiled egg, chicken drumsticks etc… Leave to steam for 2-5 minute

Health Fact: Things You Don’t Know Can Kill You (Should read)

By Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako
One of the common refrains often put up by people as the defence mechanism when they are advised to do regular medical check-ups, even when there are no apparent health challenges is to say that what they don’t know will not kill them. How wrong they are! Though death is inevitable for all, in reality, what you don’t know kills more quickly, more mercilessly and more ruthlessly than what you know.
