=>CBN Claims Responsibility For Parallel Market Crash- Guardiannews

Dollar rebounds, hits N330
THERE
are strong indications that the efforts of the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN) to stabilise the Naira may have started yielding positive
results, as the “first test-run” of the measures has hit the
speculators.
Top sources at the apex bank who pleaded anonymity,
yesterday, said that the deployment of a number of measures by the
institution had proved that turning the tide in the forex market is not
impossible, especially with the “severe punishment suffered by
currency hoarders and speculators” on Wednesday.
It will be
recalled that the CBN had said that speculators were behind the market
burble, which made a mince-meat of the Naira, sending it crashing to an
all-time low of N400 to the dollar.

A source said even
though the rates at the parallel market may fall again as speculators
may persist, they will only be “gambling” with what is left of
Wednesday’s loss, which they will eventually lose with further “strike”
from the plans.

The naira’s exchange rate to the
dollar had on Wednesday assumed multiple pricing trend at various
centres across the country, with the lowest price at N220 to the
dollar, while the highest was N300.
“Some parallel market
operators revealed that they bought from sellers at the rate of N272
and sold at N295. A good number of the sellers who had suffered huge
losses confessed that they had bought at the rate of N380 hoping to
sell at N400 before the sudden turn in fortunes,” one of the officials
said.
But with the return of speculators to mop up “cheap” dollar
at the parallel market yesterday, the exchange rate of the naira to
the dollar immediately rose to N330.
The acting President of the
Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria, Alhaji Aminu
Gwadabe, said: “Hoarding and speculative activities have returned to
the market almost immediately, pushing down the naira’s value again.”

=>USA Reduces Aid To 1.9m Nigerians Living With HIV Over Gay Support-Vanguard

ABUJA—
ABOUT 1,884,618 Nigerians living with Human Immuno Virus, HIV, risk
death if the Federal Government refuses to provide N58 billion for Anti
Retroviral Therapy, ART, for their treatment.
About 95 percent
of the infected patients largely depend on the ART from the United
States, US, government and Global Fund, which has been drastically
scaled down as a result of Nigeria’s refusal to accede to gay union.
This
was as revealed, Tuesday, by Rep Afe Olowookere, who made the
revelation in his presentation on behalf of House Committee on HIV/AIDS.
Olowookere
further disclosed that support from the US government and the Global
Fund are massive as both are responsible for about 95 percent of the
national HIV/AIDS treatment programme in the country.
He said: “Presently, the US government has scaled down its scale-up of service in the remaining 737 Local Government areas.
“In
addition, the US government has also withdrawn support for laboratory
services which the people living with HIV, PLWHIV, on ART requires to
conduct periodically to monitor their state of health.”
Also,
provision for HIV/AIDS activities to NACA under the 2016 budget proposal
is only N1.5 billion, a significant reduction from the N10 billion
given to it last year under the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme, SURE-P.
He
said to achieve the 2030 global target for 90-90-90, the Federal
Government must put more money into the national response to AIDS, else
the country risks another wave of HIV/AIDS epidemic.

=>$2.1bn: Dasuki blames Buhari for continuous detention

Ex-National
Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki has blamed President
Muhammadu Buhari for his continued detention by the Department of State
Security (DSS) since December 29, 2015. At a court hearing in Abuja
today, February 26, Dasuki’s counsel, Joseph Daudu told the court that
the president engineered his unlawful detention through his comment at
his maiden media chat. Daudu said despite being granted bail, the
president, on national television, said the federal government will not
release his client, Dasuki and Nnamdi Kanu (who is currently facing
charges for illegal possession of firearms and assisting in the
management of an unlawful society). The counsel said the president
‘openly’ stated these men have committed heinous crimes against the
society and will not be released. He also added that his team has filed a
further and better affidavit in support of Dasuki’s application,
claiming a betrayal by the president during his chat with the media.
Daudu added that his client has been incommunicado since his
incarceration, thus delaying his preparation for the allegations leveled
against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The
prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs also confirmed to the court that his
team have been served two applications. At this instance, the defense
counsel informed the court that he would like to withdraw one of the
applications.

“They had their motives and what I did was in the best interest of the country,” Oliseh began.
“While I was coach of the team they tried to hire Renard who turned them down citing three major reasons,” Oliseh told Completesportsnigeria.com in the wee hours of Friday.

“When I sought their aid to effectively carry out my duties I was ignored and instead of the helping me getting the players to give their best and placing them in a very good conditions at an advantages to the team play, they had plans to derail the progress of the team’s chances.

=>Naira Depreciates From 250/$ To N355/$-Vangaurd

By Babajide Komolafe The improving fortune of the naira in the parallel market was reversed yesterday as the currency depreciated to N355 per dollar in the market.

Vanguard investigation reveals that the parallel market exchange rate rose sharply from N305 per dollar on Tuesday to close in Lagos and Abuja at N355 per dollar, implying depreciation of N50 per dollar. This was in sharp contrast to the N70 appreciation recorded from Monday to Tuesday, when the parallel market exchange rate dropped from N375 per dollar to N305. Bureaux De Change operators however express dismay over the sudden depreciation of the naira. President, Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe attributed the development to speculation and hoarding. He said there appears to be a conspiracy to hoard dollars in order to halt the appreciation. An Abuja BDC operator who does not want his name mentioned said the people are not willing to sell dollars and this worsened the demand-supply dynamics. “It the same factor of fear and rumour that occasioned the appreciation that are also behind the depreciation”, he said.

=> Biafra, Cameroon may fight for independence together
— IBT

Ebenezer Akwanga, the human rights activist and former political prisoner, in the interview granted to the IBTimes UK has said that Biafra movement in Nigeria may join its forces with Southern Cameroon to achieve independence. Akwanga supposes that human right violations of secessionist mobvements in Southern Cameroons are the same. The man, who is now the president of the Southern Cameroons Youth League, was imprisoned and tortured in 1977 in Cameroon for six years due to his political activism. The activist believes his people might collaborate with pro-Biafrans in south-eastern Nigeria, who are also willing to become independent. “Political sequences took place which affected our culture, language, traditions, everything that makes us a people,” he said. “Around 1984 the Cameroon Anglophone Movement started. It was first looking for a return to a federal system of governance and later on became the Southern Cameroon Restoration Movement. “The Southern Cameroons Youth League was born and our goal was simple: We wanted the total and unconditional independence of the Southern Cameroons.” On the other hand, a coordinator of Indigenous People of Biafra in Anambra state, who asked not to be named, confirmed pro-Biafrans and people in Southern Cameroons might join their forces. “IPOB is ready to work or join forces with any group seeking for independence from slavery and persecution. And our people in Southern Cameroon are not any different,” the coordinator stated. David Otto, CEO of UK-based global security provider TGS Intelligence Consultants, has said that a coalition between the two separatist movements is very expected and could further destabilize the region. He said: “Although the Southern Cameroon National Council (SCNS) is purely a peaceful movement, they could be tempted to join forces with the Biafra movement, which has been vocal in their willingness to use arms against the Nigerian government.

You also have to weigh the consequences of raiding the camp with such number of persons, because the insurgents have nothing to lose. “The second option is to explore ways of extracting them out through negotiation and negotiation is still possible.” Speaking further, Sani informed that the federal government needs to reach out to some people who may help with the negotiation.

=>300 confirmed dead as Fulani herdsmen attack communities-Vanguard

No fewer than 300 persons have been confirmed dead following a siege on Agatu local government area of Benue state. Naij.com had reported two days ago that the local government area was under attack by over 300 militants, a development which was reported to have erupted following the Senate south rerun election in the state. Fresh reports from Vanguard have it that at least 300 persons have lost their lives following series of attacks by Fulani herdsmen in the last one week. Villages including Okokolo, Akwu, Ocholonya, Adagbo, Ugboku and Aila were reportedly razed as decomposing bodies of those killed were seen littering the communities. “Several communities including Obagaji, the local government headquarters, where people usually took refuge in the past, have been deserted. “People are fleeing into Ugbokpo in neighbouring Apa council. It is a well coordinated attack on Agatu communities. “As I speak with you, fighting is still raging; many are missing and we have a huge number of displaced persons without facilities to house them,” a source at the local government confirmed. Opiatoha K’Idoma, a socio-cultural organisation of Idoma sons and daughters, also issued a statement through its secretary, Adoka Adaji, where it stated that the crisis had created a huge refugee situation in the area. The statement read: “What we see happening in Agatu today can be likened to happenings in the North-East and we call for urgent action by the Federal Government. “The Idoma nation is helpless. Over 300 Agatu people have been killed and others maimed in one week without concerted effort by the state government to abate the attack, killings and destruction. “On the other hand, there are no identifiable camps to cater for the Internally Displaced Persons, which include mostly women and children; we call on the Federal Government to establish a full military base in Agatu, otherwise the area will soon become history.”
