The Supreme Court on Friday told the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, that he must return to the Code of Conduct Tribunal to face trial in the suit instituted against him over false declaration of assets.

The request by Saraki to declare the sitting of just two members of the CCT as invalid was overruled by the Supreme Court.
The apex court said by virtue of Section 28 of the Interpretation Act, the sitting of two members was valid.
The apex court also said the intention of the law establishing the CCT is to make its proceedings criminal.
It also said the Tribunal has quasi jurisdiction and so can issue bench warrant contrary to the position of Saraki.

=>   ‘Nigerians May Starve To Death By 2050’ — Minister Of Agriculture, Ogbeh

THE Presidency, yesterday, raised alarm that Nigerians would starve to
death by 2050 if nothing was done to ensure an all year round farming.
It also said with the rate the country was going, the population would by 2050 rise to 509 million.
According to the Federal Government, the present mode of farming will not sustain the increasing population in the country.
It
noted that there was the urgent need for all major stakeholders to work
towards improving mechanized farming and irrigation, to ensure an all
year farming to avert the problem.
Speaking, yesterday, during
the budget defence of 2016, Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh,
said the country had the capacity to grow the grass required by the
cattle to consume.
He said: “We have written to state governments
to encourage them to develop dams and canals so that agriculture
becomes an all year round activity and it is not confined to the rainy
season alone.
“Besides, by 2050, Nigeria population will be very
close to 500 million at the current rate of growth. This is just 34years
from now. If we carry on at the current rate of one crop per year, with
very low mechanization, Nigerians run the risk of starving to death.

=> Nigeria’s economy to grow by 3.78%

Nigeria’s economy, reeling from the drop in oil prices, is expected to
grow by 3.78 percent this year, up from 2.97 percent in 2015, as it
tries to confront its worst crisis in decades, the national bureau of
statistics said on Thursday.
The statistics office expected growth to reach an average of 5.41
percent yearly between 2017 and 2019 as infrastructure development
provide support for both the oil and non-oil sectors, it said.
“Output in the oil and non-oil sectors are expected to perform
marginally better relative to 2015,” the bureau said in a report,
explaining its forecast.
Africa’s top oil producer has been hit hard by a slump in oil prices,
which has eroded public finances and weakened its currency.
The naira currency has weakened 35 percent below its official level on
the black market, weighed down by sinking oil prices and speculation
that Africa’s biggest economy will have to formally devalue.
President Muhammadu Buhari is against devaluation, backing the central
bank’s stance of keeping rates unchanged in the face of sharp falls
against the dollar on the black market.
“Speculative pressure on the naira is likely to exist in 2016 in light
of the current state of foreign reserves and inflation may rise to 10.16
by year end,” the report said.READ FULL NEWS….

Nigerian comedian Francis Agoda more popularly referred to as I Go Dye has revealed that he once turned down an offer to go abroad for studies.
In an exclusive chat with Punch, the comedian said he once had an opportunity to go study Structural Engineering at the University of New York but he turned it down.
He joked about it saying he probably could have died if he had followed that path.
He said: “I probably could have died by now if I decided to become a Structural Engineer.”
He shed some light on his past saying he was once part of the Junior Engineering Technical Society which helped him express himself in aspects of creativity.
In those early years, as young as 12, he claimed he used the chance the engineering group gave him to build little gadgets and machines like a radio transmitter, a hovercraft, a mini helicopter and a battery table fan among other things.
These ingenuity helped him secure a scholarship to travel abroad in 1992, a move he refused to pursue.
But the entertainer said he chose comedy over a formal education because of the fulfillment he draws from it.
He said: “Academic pursuit depends on personal interest. I am still acquiring knowledge on a daily basis. There is no limit to educational quest. The truth of the matter is that life is a choice. Until you do things you love, you cannot really be happy. Those things I built at the time are still part of my life today. But I chose comedy because that is where my love lies.
“I started building things at the young age of about 12. At a point, I was no longer really comfortable with that path of life.”
