President Muhammadu Buhari
on Sunday night left for London, United Kingdom (UK) to meet with his
doctors, where the length of his stay would be determined by his medical
team.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity,
Femi Adesina, said the president who had planned to depart on
Sunday afternoon but delayed the trip by some hours to receive the 82
freed Chibok girls,
had transmitted a letter to the National Assembly in this respect. On
his twitter handle on Sunday night, Adesina gave notice of the trip
saying:

“PMB travels tonight for medical follow-up.
The length of stay to be determined by London doctors. Govt to function
normally under VP.”

Subsequently, the President
himself subsequently confirmed his departure and his notification of the
trip to the National Assembly in a series of tweets from his official
twitter handle.

Before he departed, the President said that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo
will take charge of government in his absence, while assuring that
there was no cause for anxiety concerning his health. On his twitter
handle, he wrote:

“I’d like to assure all Nigerians
that there is no cause for worry. I appreciate your prayers and kind
wishes. May God continue to bless Nigeria.”

He also
disclosed that he had transmitted letters of his medical vacation to the
Senate and the House of Representatives as required by Section 145 (1)
of the Constitution.

“I have sent the required letters
regarding my trip to @NGRSenate and @HouseNGR, in line with Section
145(1) of the 1999 Constitution.”

To pay a farewell visit to President Buhari before his departure, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were in the Presidential Villa on Sunday night

“I
received Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Bukola Saraki
and Speaker Yakubu Dogara at home this evening ahead of my trip
tonight,” President Buhari confirmed on his twitter handle on Sunday.

This
will be the President’s fourth medical vacation to the United Kingdom
since his inauguration on May 29, 2015. He returned from his last trip
to the United Kingdom on March 10, 2017, which lasted 49 days, a trip
that caused anxiety among many Nigerians following an extension of the
trip initially planned for ten days.
This new development may be
an eventual confirmation of the speculations that the President has been
gravely ill and needs to see his doctors.
President Buhari’s
health has continued to generate controversy, since he returned from the
last medical vacation, following his failure to attend the last three
meetings of the Federal Executive Council, FEC.
Earlier, while hosting the 82 rescued Chibok schoolgirls to a light reception, President Buhari described their rescue as a pleasant 2nd-anniversary gift to Nigerians.

While
commending all those who contributed in one way or another to secure
the Chibok Girls release, Buhari also reassured Nigerians, especially
relatives and friends of the remaining girls that the Federal Government
will spare no effort to see that they and all other Nigerians who have
been abducted safely regain their freedom.
